Summer Maintenance Tips for Your Car

Summer Maintenance Tips for Your Car

When the weather warms up and skies turn blue, it’s a good time to do a quick check-up and make sure your car is ready to hit the road. Long road trips and summer heat can be rough on a car, but following a few simple tips will help keep your family safe and your car healthy.

Many times, maintaining your car’s tires can be overlooked, but it is an important part of any summer maintenance checklist. A worn down, under-inflated, over-inflated, or misaligned tire can be extremely dangerous, especially on hot summer roads. Check your owner’s manual to find out what your car’s tire pressure should be and test it with a hand pressure gauge to ensure your tires are not over-inflated or under-inflated. Don’t forget to check your spare tire as well.

Preventative Maintenance is important!

Hot summer weather means a higher risk of your engine overheating. Make sure you change your oil and oil filter every three months to keep your engine running smoothly and cleanly. To prevent your car from overheating, check that your radiator hoses and fan belts are in good working condition. Hoses should be firm, not soft, and belts should be examined for any signs of cracks or damage. Although vehicle cooling systems are designed to keep your car running at optimum temperatures, it is a good idea to check your coolant levels and make sure your radiator is in good condition and doesn’t have any leaks or damage.

The most important safety feature in your car are the brakes. Stay safe on those summer road trips by having your brakes and brake linings checked at your local service shop or brake specialist. There’s nothing worse than being trapped in a hot car without air conditioning. Make sure your A/C system is running correctly and that your refrigerant levels are topped up. Lastly, put together a summer emergency kit to help you stay safe on the road. Include a variety of wrenches and screwdrivers, jumper cables, a jack and tire iron, a tire inflation kit, water for the radiator, emergency flares, gloves, a towel or blanket, and a flashlight.

Following these easy guidelines will help ensure your family stays safe on the road during those hot summer months and family road trips. When your car is properly maintained, you can rest easy and enjoy trips to the beach and summer vacations no matter the driving distance.
